Way back in the late 90’s our co-founder Ken moved to Japan and soon fell in love with Japanese culture, food, and our other co-founder, Sanae. Over the years, several friends and former colleagues started asking for Japanese snack “care packages”. This sparked an idea…
Starting Something New
In 2011 Ken and Sanae opened Freedom Japanese Market as an online store selling a wide variety of Japanese goods. By far the most popular item was the Fukubukuro (grab bag of Japanese snacks).
In 2012 the company shifted to curating monthly themed boxes of authentic Japanese snacks.
Who we are greatly influences our business
As a multicultural, family-run business, we are passionate about sharing an authentic and diverse mix of Japanese snacks. We only include snacks we like, and only ship boxes we would love to receive. All our boxes are sourced, packed, and shipped directly from Japan.
As a small, family-owned business in Japan, we appreciate and support small Japanese snack makers. We love exploring new confectionery stores to find just the right treat for next month’s box.
As a family that has a diverse range of favorite treats, we understand the importance of snack variety. Your box will always include an assortment of traditional, mainstream, and fun snacks. This way there is something for everyone, and you can expand your Japan snacking horizons.

Where We Are Today
Our team has grown now that the next generation (Juliet and Kevin) are old enough to help. We are so excited to help you discover a variety of fun, traditional and quirky snacks found only in Japan.
