Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
SUBSCRIPTION
How does the subscription system work?
Our subscription service allows our customers to automatically receive a fun assortment of Japanese snacks each month without having to fill out redundant paperwork each time. The subscription is commitment free, and you can cancel it whenever you want from your account.
You will be charged for the first box when you create your subscription. The first package will be shipped from our office within a week. As long as you continue your subscription, your subscription fee will automatically be collected on the 20th of each following month. We will send a reminder email on the 15th to let you know that the fee will be collected.
How can I purchase a single box?
We are a subscription service, but you are more than welcome to create a subscription, pay for the first box, and then unsubscribe right after. This is also a great way to send a gift box! Once your payment is received after setting up the subscription (this only takes a few minutes) we will start preparing the first package, even if you suspend your subscription. You will not be charged in the following months and will not receive the following monthly boxes.
Can I send a box as a gift?
If you would like to send a box (or monthly subscription) to a friend or loved one, you can even customize the package with a message inside. This service is completely free. Just send us an email right with the message you would like to have included after you create your subscription (support@freedomjapanesemarket.com) and we will add it to the first box.
Examples:
Happy Birthday, Ken! けんさん、お誕生日おめでとうございます!
Of course, we can ship the box of snacks directly to the person you want to gift it to. You just need to give the recipient’s shipping address at checkout and use your address as the billing address.
Note: If you only want to send one box, please refer to the “How can I purchase a single box?” FAQ
Why Did My Subscription Renew?
All of our subscriptions automatically renew after the subscription cycle ends. In order to place a one-time subscription, you will need to cancel your order prior to the next billing date. Please note that you will receive an email 5 days before the next subscription fee is collected.
If you fail to cancel your subscription before your billing date, you will be charged for a subscription renewal. You can cancel future renewals, but will not be refunded for the new renewal. You will still be sent the box from the last renewal.
What is your refund policy?
Subscription fees paid are final and non-refundable. Please cancel the subscription before the renewal date if you do not wish to be charged for future boxes. Please note that we are in the business of bringing joy to people around the world with boxes of delicious Japanese treats and we have no interest in sending boxes to people who do not want them. This is why we send a reminder email before collecting subscription fees.
We may suspend or terminate your account and/or payment functionality, and suspend or cancel any pending box shipments, if there is a dispute from your credit card company/PayPal, or if your credit card company/PayPal notifies us of actual or suspected fraud on your credit card account.
If you decide to open a case with PayPal/Stripe, please note that they have the final decision about the claim.
If you have any further questions or concerns please contact us at support@freedomjapanesemarket.com.
What currency are your prices quoted in?
All prices on our website are in USD.
Please note that the exchange rate fluctuates every day so we cannot quote you the specific price in another currency – you can check the exchange rate as a reference here: https://www.xe.com/currencyconverter/.
Your bank will process the currency exchange so be aware that the pricing will be in your local currency.
I forgot to cancel my subscription. Can I return the box for a refund?
Subscriptions must be canceled prior to the billing date or they will renew for another month.
Once your subscription renews and your order has been processed, we are unable to cancel the order or accept a returned box for a refund.
If you choose to send back your box, please be aware that a refund will not be issued.
SHIPPING
When does my box ship?
The first box typically ships out within a week of your initial order. You will receive a shipment notification when your box has shipped. Subsequent boxes will ship at the end of the beginning of each month.
How much is shipping?
Shipping is free for subscription orders except for some countries listed below.
Due to the increased shipping costs, subscription boxes shipped to the following destinations have the following shipping fee per box:
DHL Express:
- Malta – $9.99
- Bahrain, Israel, United Arab Emirates – $22.99
Japan Post EMS:
- India, Cambodia – $4.99
- Australia, Canada, France, Germany – $9.99
- Brazil, Chile, Peru – $14.99
We declare a value of 2000 JPY for each of our boxes. This usually falls within the duty-free allowance for most countries. However, it is up to the customer to confirm the country’s import regulations as we are not responsible for any customs fees charged.
My box/order has shipped. When will it arrive?
Boxes usually arrive within 5-15 business days after the ship date, but please allow up to 4 weeks as there might be local customs or weather delays.
Because of these possible delays due to weather, postal disruption, or customs, we ask you to wait for the above timeframes before you inquire about your lost or missing box.
If you receive a letter or message from the post office about your damaged or lost box, feel free to email us with a photo of the letter or message so we can take care of the matter right away.
If your box is shipped via Japan Post, the final delivery will be made by your local government-sponsored postal service (for example, in the U.S., USPS makes the final delivery of your box).
Will my box arrive by a specific date?
Generally, orders arrive within 1-3 weeks of being placed, depending on the shipping conditions at the destination country. Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee that your box will arrive by a certain date because our boxes ship directly from Japan and international shipping can be unpredictable (inclement weather, shipping delays, seasonal volume issues etc.).
If your shipment has not arrived after 4 weeks from the shipping confirmation email, please feel free to contact us at support@freedomjapanesemarket.com and we will do our best to help.
Will my package be delayed in customs?
Before ordering, we recommend you double-check any customs regulations that can affect your shipment and cause delays or delivery problems. When items are shipped internationally, every box must go through customs. This may cause a slight delay in the arrival of your shipment. After customs clear your package, it will be delivered to your local post office.
Please note that shipments to the EU may require additional information from customs such as your Passport No. or Tax ID, and may require a duty payment before the parcel is cleared by customs.
Why isn't my package moving?
We can certainly control how fast your package is shipped from our office. Unfortunately, we cannot control any delays that might happen while your package is in transit.
All international shipments are subject to customs inspection. Once your package arrives in the destination country, customs will inspect the package. We do not have any control over when customs will release the package. Keep an eye on your tracking information to watch your package’s journey and see when it’s released.
Am I going to pay additional customs fees?
The total cost does not cover any customs fees or taxes that may be charged by your country during the delivery process. Subscribers are responsible for such fees.
Please double-check your country’s customs regulations. Each country has different rules regarding the customs fee and tax. Please keep in mind that we do not have control over the import taxes because customs taxes are charged by your local government.
Although tax is paid in Japan at the time of dispatch, we ask you to keep in mind that we have no control over the application or not of these customs fees.
However, while we process your crates for shipment, we do everything we can to lower the chances that your crates will be flagged and charged customs fees.
My box is missing an item or is damaged. What should I do?
It is very important to us to treat each of our boxes the same way we would want a package to us treated. Unfortunately, we only have control of the package while it is in our hands. If the exterior of the box is scuffed or marked, we cannot do anything other than contact the post office to file a complaint.
However, if we have made a mistake and not added a snack to a package, please contact us at support@freedomjapanesemarket.com with pictures of the contents of the box and we will take care of the matter right away.
My package was marked as delivered, but has not reached me. What do I do?
It is very common for there to be a lag in time from when the parcel is marked as “delivered” and when it actually arrives. Sometimes, the post office will mark an item as delivered and it won’t arrive until a few days later.
If your package does not arrive within 5 business days of being marked as delivered, we ask that you contact your local post office first and then contact us at support@freedomjapanesemarket.com so we can proceed with the next steps!
What does "Arrival At Collection Point" mean?
If your tracking says: “Item arrival at the collection point for pick-up” that means your parcel is ready for pickup at the local post office branch. We recommend that you contact your local post office as soon as possible. Please note that if you are unable to pick up your package for a week or two, your item could be returned back to Japan.
Please contact your local post office to get more information about the delivery.
